Tramping in New Zealand

New Zealand has an amazing variety of beautiful scenery packed into a relatively small area. One summer Charles (the more handsome fellow you will see in some of the pictures) and I decided to do a little tramping in areas that can be reached within 2 hours drive of Wanganui. In other words, most of the lower North Island. The images that follow and on the Mt Egmont page were mostly taken on those tramps. We have more images of New Zealand on our New Zealand Scenery Wallpapers Pages.

Atene - on the Whanganui River

At times the ridge is so sharp you wonder how a tree could hold on From the Whanganui river, which is only a few metres above sea level at Atene, the track climbs gently to an altitude about 500 metres. Just before reaching this height there is a beautiful cluster of endemic ferns living around the roots of trees. The tongue like fern is Trichomanes reniforme.

Two pictures of an old, dry loop of the Whanganui river. The Atene tramp follows an 18 kilometre track along a ridge around the outside of this loop. The moderate tramp takes between 6 and 8 hours. The image on the right shows the old Whanganui riverbed (foreground and the Whanganui river (background)
Taupo:

Taupo Walk. This is a gentle 2 hour walk through lush native bush with many mature native trees and tree ferns, and is accessed about an half hour's drive north west of Turangi township, to the west of Lake Taupo. Old and dying trees become covered in epiphytes (right). There are also many scenes like the one on the left where native tree ferns can be seen bathed in sunlight coming through openings in the canopy. I am not expert at identifying N. Z. native trees so will leave them unnamed, saying only that all of those shown are indeed native to NZ, and probably endemic also.
