James Collins of San Francisco writes: I'm very excited about your delphiniums here in San Francisco, after growing one 'Double Innocence' from Annies Annuals in the bed next to King Arthur and Black Knight (Pacific Giants). No comparison for vigor and general robustness.
You can see clearly in this photo from my perennial border this morning. In the front, center is a three year old clump of King Arthur. Behind it is a seedling of Double Innocence from Annies Annuals planted just in mid-March 08. It's already a good six inches taller and thick stemmed enough to not need staking. I'm anxious to see how it stands up to San Francisco's cool, damp winters. |

Here's the garden today (below). Double innocence is just opening. Right in the center above the pink Russell lupine. First year seedling, four feet tall. Stem as thick as a Sharpie marker.
Looking at the tip of the tallest foxglove below, go up to the downtown San Francisco skyline and a little left, just left of the large, dark box, is the transamerica pyramid. |
