Delphinium Gallery 1999

Shifting our home and business about 300 kilometres south to Wanganui occupied our minds in 1999 and photographs of delphiniums took second place.

The first photograph in this gallery was taken in 1999 but the others are mainly pictures from previous years which we scanned recently.

brenda pale blue panache
"Brenda" A bit untidy and in this instance short and badly grown, but the colour is true and it is a shot of a delphinium growing and flowering in Wanganui. "Sarita" is a simply wonderful mid to light blue double with the most charming frilly, green tinged petals in the centre. It is common for our double flowering delphiniums to do this in NZ and happens more in conditions of low light. "Panache". Not a large spike. In fact rather skinny and of medium height, but the colour is a beautiful rich purple (which the photograph does not do justice to).
pirouette white with black bee sarita
"Pirouette" has a solid, quite short, wide spike with plenty of side growths making her ideal for the flower garden. Sometimes used in our breeding programme. This white with a black bee was most striking but unfortunately short lived so had to go in the trash bin. "B9607" was a fairly short seedling with sparse florets, but performs well when used as a parent to introduce the frilly petal form to add variety to the blues we offer.
blue striped bee pepe shadehouse
"B17" as a seedling now also used for frilly petals. As a mature plant she has a very tall well shaped spike. "Pepe" Quite an old selection which is still much admired, again a frilly petalled plant, this time with a strong, dark stem. This photo is from January 2000 but is here as a shot from our new nursery. The flowering plants are the start of our 2000 seed crop.
