The following are photographs from our delphinium breeding beds and trial plantings, in the summer of 1998.
The first and last pictures are of breeding stock and the middle two are first year delphinium seedlings. The seedlings will grow much more strongly in their second year.
This plant was a seedling produced from a cross with the English variety "Min". The florets are large and the stem quite soft and fleshy, but the flower form and colour is interesting. We use plants like this from time to time, trying to combine the more desirable traits with a stronger stem.
A beautiful first year, double flowered, pastel seedling in its second (autumn) flowering. This plant has especially strong, wire like stems. Because double flowered plants such as this produce very little pollen and do not easily set seed, seed when available is more expensive.
A first year seedling from our crosses for pinks. This cross produces mostly slightly picottee florets with ruffled edges and "fluffy" bees.
Pu5. This plant was unremarkable in it's first year and was lucky to be saved. It has since developed into one of the strongest, longest, toughest stemmed and evenly formed plants we have, and is now used extensively in our breeding programme. Note how the petals on the lowest florets have not yet begun to drop even though the spikes are within a few days of being fully formed. This feature is a must for all our parent stock. The plants in this photo are over 8ft tall and are supported only by sheep netting below the level of the florets.
